Invisible Balls And More

Great for: developing non-verbal communication, building trust and collaborative skills, engaging learners in imaginative play, creative problem solving

This exercise has been developed from many similar exercises encountered in our practice, including Viola Spolin’s Play Ball.

Gather learners in a circle and take an “invisible ball” from your pocket (imagining it is the size of a tennis ball). Invite learners to engage in the exercise without speaking. Begin a game of catch with the ball, modelling how you might throw, roll, bounce, and catch the ball with different learners. Allow the learners to play and develop the game at their own pace.

Adaptations:

- Increase the size of the ball to various imagined sizes - for example the ball may grow to be so large that learners need to work together to move it

- Increase the number of imaginary balls

- Bring other imaginary objects into the circle
