Shopping For Movement

Great for: activating working memory, practising observational skills, building movement patterns, developing awareness of different parts of the body

A twist on the “shopping list” game.

Arrange learners in a circle and choose one learner to model a movement. The beauty of this game is its simplicity, so take a ‘less is more’ approach. The movement need not be more complex than raising an arm. All the learners then repeat the movement just modelled, returning to the starting position afterwards. At this point the accumulation begins, with the second learner repeating the first learner's movement and then adding their own onto it. The group then repeats the extended phrase. This process is repeated until all learners have added a movement.

Adaptations:

- Increase or decrease the tempo movements are performed at. Tempo could also change part way through a repetition of the phrase created

- Challenge learners to only use one body part to move

- Challenge learners to make movements as small or large as they can
