Workshops for Primary and SEND settings
We offer specialized movement and storytelling sessions for primary and SEND settings. The workshops are designed to complement and enhance learners existing learning, with learning outcomes tailored to align with National Curriculum statements.
We offer three core workshops, all of which are based around traditional stories. If you don't feel any of these are quite right for your setting however, we are more than happy to create a workshop which is perfect for you.
All workshops are structured as follows:
1. Prelude - introductions and movement warm-up
2. Exposition - engaging with the story through movement
3. Development - making a creative response to the story
4. Coda - presenting creative responses, warm-down and reflection
Quality over quantity is very much at the heart of our ethos. The usual maximum number of students who can participate in a given workshop is 30, and the length of each workshop is 75 minutes.
Example lesson plan
Workshop title: Jack and the Beanstalk Age group: Key Stage 1 learners Learning outcomes: 1. Learners will engage with and have a good understanding of the traditional tale Jack and the Beanstalk, being able to discuss characters, settings and key events within the narrative 2. Learners will engage in movement exercises, with a focus on developing sense of balance, co-ordination and spatial awareness. 3. Learners will develop a creative response to the stimulus (Jack and the Beanstalk) and present this to peers. Prelude - Introductions / parity - learners to sit in a circle with facilitator, sharing names through verbal / other communicative means. Collaboratively establish ground rules for the workshop, review essential H&S guidance. - Prior knowledge and thoughts - learners to share prior thoughts and questions they may have surrounding the experience. - Movement warm-up - a mixture of games / exercises to initiate / stretch key muscle groups and raise heart rate (i.e. the number game - helpful for familiarising learners physically with the space, building rhythmic awareness and initiating composition. Learners move around the space, with various movements being assigned a number - each time a certain number is called / shown, the movement must be performed regardless of where the learners are situated within the space). Exposition - Learners 'move' through a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk, engaging with verbal retelling, visuals, props and live / recorded sound. For example, when Jack goes to the market to sell the family cow, students will move through the space to live handheld percussion, modifying the way they are moving according to prompts given by the facilitator. - At the end of the retelling, learners will regroup and retrieve knowledge of key characters, settings and events within the story. Development - This section is the most flexible of the workshop and is respondent to learners' experiences and actions throughout the first two part of the workshop. Workshop facilitator will initiate a discussion around how to creatively respond to the story, with questions such as: What does Jack do after the events in the story? What would happen if the giant had caught Jack? Think about the movements we have created / used, can you compose a short movement response using and modifying these? What is your favourite part of the story? How could we represent this in another way? - After discussion, learners will produce a creative response through a medium of their choosing (i.e. movement, acting, sketching, writing, sound), with flexibility to work individually, in groups, or as a whole class. Coda - Students share creative responses with peers. The workshop then concludes with learners returning to the circle and engaging with a short warm-down and whole-class reflection.
